Indoor Debut for Junior Harriers

Fifteen Junior Harriers made more Harriers history on November 22nd .They were the first group of Harriers to ever compete in the Indoor Standard Series held once a month in the Winter at the Gateshead College Academy of Sport building (next to the International Stadium).

Several Harriers were also making their Track & Field debuts. In amongst them was (U13B) Ben Merrington. Ben was the most inexperienced athlete in the Harriers group but acquitted himself very well at his first meeting in the 60m & Long Jump (LJ). The other U13 Boys competing were Robbie Till & Adam Playle. Both got PBs in their events. Both boys got a PB in the Long Jump with Adam also getting a PB in the Shot (SP) with a 43cm improvement , taking 3rd place. Robbie improved his 60m time by almost 4/10ths of a second.

Robbie & Adam were both medal winners in the Outdoor season & were trophy winners at the Harriers annual presentation evening for their efforts this season.

The U13 Girls were represented by two of the most competitive all round athletes in the club, Aimee Barlow & Emma Scarborough. Emma had already competed at the South Yorkshire Indoor Series at Sheffield earlier this month & also at an Open Championship event again at Sheffield on November 17th. At that event Emma threw the Shot 6.12cm to take her onto the Power of 10 rankings. At Gateshead she competed in the 60M hurdles , taking a comfortable 1st place. Emma also came joint 1st in the High Jump with Aimee with both girls clearing 1.20m. Aimee ran well in her first indoor 60m & claimed 3rd place in her first Shot Put competition.

No fewer than eight Year 8 pupils turned out in the U15 age category. The ever improving Rory Fletcher made his debut doing well in both the LJ & SP as well as the 60m. Rory took 3rd place in the Long Jump. Joseph Dredge also made his SP competition debut after taking the Club record at U13 level at Marie’s Academy Awards night.  U13 Silver Shot Put medalist at the 2012 Anne-Marie Readshaw event , Joseph Devine , now an U15 athlete & one of the Club’s most improved Shot Putters, Ryan Fleetham also competed for Sedgefield in the Shot. The two Josephs & Ryan also joined Rory at the Long Jump Pit & Joseph Dredge also made his 60m debut.

Kate Willis was another Harrier making a debut with a great run in the 60m. Kate Carmichael, Olivia Skilbeck & Charlotte Scurr were the other U15 girl competitors.  Kate C & Olivia joined the U15 Boys at the Shot Put circle & both ran well in the 60m. Kate took 3rd in the U15 Shot despite being only 12 & Charlotte took 3rd in the High Jump & also competed at 60m.

The two oldest & most experienced athletes in the Field Events Group, , Megan Devine & Zoe Dobson made their indoor debuts competing in the U17 category. Both girls are well used to Shot Put competitions but this was probably the most competitive they have faced with a larger field than usual .  Zoe , still only 14 did very well taking a credible 5th place .Megan throwing 6.69m took a fantastic 2nd place.

All these record breaking Harriers represented the club well in this Grand Prix competition & were a credit to the Club. There are 4 more Winter Events at Gateshead at U13 level upwards. They are on December 13th, January 17th, February 21st & March 21st.

Come & join these athletes at a great venue & have a go yourself.
